Fleming College delivers programs for the workforce of the future

With back-to-school in the air, it’s the perfect time to give your education — and career goals — a boost.
Whether you’re just starting to think about post-secondary education or looking to enhance skills, Fleming College offers cutting-edge applied health and trades programs tailored to meet the growing demands of the modern workforce.
President Maureen Adamson credits a well-rounded combination of theoretical learning and hands-on experience in preparing Fleming students for real-life workplace scenarios.
“For example, all our applied health programs, which are meticulously designed to meet the high demand in today’s labour market, feature hands-on simulations, from simple exercises to complex scenarios,” said President Adamson.
“These experiences bridge classroom learning with real-world application, ensuring our students are equipped to meet the critical needs of the healthcare industry.”
Fleming’s School of Health and Community Services has been actively researching innovative programming that meets current labour market demands.
Some examples include Veterinary Technician; Medical Diagnostic-related programs (such as Medical Laboratory Technician and Sonographers, and Radiation Technologists), and additional Allied Health programs, such as Physician Assistant and Perfusionist.
The first new programs planned to launch in Fall 2025 are Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography and Veterinary Technician.
“Today’s students are unique in their learning approaches. The way we deliver education is so much more flexible, which enables students from different backgrounds to pursue education in various formats.” Dean, School of Health and Community Services, Nick Stone said. Fleming’s online, in-person, and hybrid curriculums are designed to enable students to obtain credentials while they continue working. Stone also noted a demand for more pharmacy technicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, personal support workers, and health care managers.
The trades and technology programming at Fleming offers everything from plumbing and welding to carpentry and electrical.
“Trades are always in demand,” Dean, School of Trades and Technology and Business and Information Technology, Liz Kassab said. “Covid showed us something important — during disrupted times, trades never stopped. Think about the industries that can’t be done with a click of a button.”
In the popular Carpentry and Renovation Technician program, Kassab said students gain practical experience working in a state-of-the-art, multi-level structure, designed to simulate a house.
“The open space allows students invaluable experience in applying what they’ve learned to the actual construction of a miniature home. The hands-on skills they develop set them up for success once they’re outside Fleming’s walls.” Kassab said.
Fleming boasts programs unique to the province as well, created by industry demands. For example, a shortage of sports vehicle technicians inspired the Motive Power Technician diploma program — the first of its kind in Ontario. Starting in January, students can receive interdisciplinary training in aviation, marine, and recreational vehicle maintenance and repair.
Many Fleming programs offer co-ops and in-person, online, or hybrid learning designed to teach any type of learner. Apply now and start as early as January 2025.
